City-scale cooling and thermal comfort: A dual-index comparison of heat mitigation strategy effectiveness across geographically-diverse cities

Building on the Cooling Singapore project, aimed at addressing the challenges of urban heat in Singapore, this study extends its framework to two European cities: Madrid (Spain) and Vienna (Austria). Beyond assessing Urban Heat Island intensity, the research compares six city-scale heat mitigation strategies using a dual-index approach that combines thermal comfort and atmospheric thermodynamics. The results highlight context-specific trade-offs between roof-based, vegetation-based, and anthropogenic heat reduction measures, demonstrating that the effectiveness of cooling strategies varies across climates. The study underscores the importance of tailoring urban heat mitigation to local environmental conditions rather than relying on one-size-fits-all solutions.
